First 911 Call

Kyle Hayes, Communications Specialist, Bethany PD-Oklahoma

My first ever 911 call was in July of 2000 on the graveyard shift. A female called saying that someone trying to get into her back door, I immediately started officer her way and stayed on the phone line with her. She advised that she had 2 small children in the house and I had her hide the kids where ever she could. While on the phone waiting for officers to arrive the caller stated that it was her ex-boyfriend and he was armed with a knife. The male subject made it inside and I was able to hear him talking to her in the background. Then all of the sudden I hear someone else yelling, it turned out to be one of the officers. The ex-boyfriend was arrested and taken to the county jail. The female caller and her kids were unharmed.

Over my long career I have had other amazing calls, this one was just the one that started it all. It takes a lot to do what we do everyday. We all will have good days and bad days. But, at the end we are here to answer the call and are prepared for anything to help citizens, police officers, firefighters and EMTs.
