Not Like Every Day

JoLynn McCabe, Emergency Services Dispatcher, Bullhead City Police Department 911 Communications Section

That day that starts like every day. 911 calls, non-emergency calls, dispatching units, running names and vehicles, entering, locating, clearing, repeat, just like every day. Until that call comes in that says that all available personnel need to respond to the station for an emergency meeting.

The dispatchers can’t all attend the meeting. What could be happening? Someone has to go. One dispatcher can go and will come back and tell everyone else. What could be happening? It was a day like every other day.

The dispatcher who attends the meeting comes back and advises that one of our fellow employees has unexpectedly passed away. This day is not like every day. The dispatchers answer 911 calls, non-emergency calls, dispatch units, running names and vehicles, entering, locating, clearing, repeat, just like every day. It is not like every day.
